I'm going to require a copy of this for... "research" purposes.

Yeah... that's it.

The actor who played Father Jack passed away a few days ago, sadly.

Art books are always great, remember, internet images weren't always around for references. Serious artists pay top dollar for what you dismiss as smut.

Should not have been drinking when I read this. Funny stuff. In all seriousness though artists typically have to draw a lot of nudes of the human body to get a grasp on anatomy. Although in this case it seems to be meant purely for fanservice

Its followup, How to Draw Boobs is sorely needed, if a too large portion of fan service is any indication. It should be required reading animators and artists of fan service and ecchi titles.

The excuse of it being for artistic reference might not be very good, as they would probably want to know why you're drawing panties in the first place.

What they showed was very nice though. Wondering if it could be found in PDF format. I prefer my "reference" material in digital form to physical form for security purposes. Makes it harder to find and therefore ask "What is this?"

Judging from some of the thigh gaps in the pictures in this article I wouldn't get my hopes up too much if you're hoping for something to teach people more realistic ways of drawing boobs rather than the usual anime/manga fair.

Regardless of that, I wonder if any of the places I typically order from will be able to import these...

Well said.

I'm particularly interested in the follow-up book, How to Draw Boobs, since it's a part of human anatomy many artists struggle with.

I'm not expecting much. If it marginally pushes things in the right direction, that's good. And I don't expect them to actually use it in the extent I said

I doubt that student of animation and comic would take this book seriously. I mean there are tons of photographs of women in underwear which they can use them as reference.

Plus actual models, at least for students. Though there may be some interest in drawing it in the style and not just based on realism, though there is perhaps not as much stylization you can do in this area, though I'm not an artist.

As long as these books don't reinforce anymore bad drawing habits. Stylistic choices aside, clothing can only wrap around ones genitals so tightly.

I can't stress how essential life drawing is when I talk to fellow artists at my college.

I took a Life Drawing class last Spring and my art that I've been working on SINCE I WAS 12 (I'm 24 now, BTW) skyrocketed in quality in just THREE MONTHS!

Life drawing isn't just helpful or recommended; it's NEEDED if you wanna draw comics or whatever.

As for the book mentioned in the article? ...It seems a bit different for "how to draw manga' books. But also seems par for the course at the same time for some reason. Oh, Japan...

Now all we need is a "how To Draw Panties" step by step video with some scenes from our favorite Anime shows for reference hell you can do a whole documentary on Strike Witches alone. Wink

I'd like to play devil's advocate and say that this book, and the potential whole series if it pans out, might be handy for people who want to draw suggestive artwork but can't quite figure out how to get it right and don't have the time or money to take art classes. It could also make a "great" gift if you personally know someone who can't draw sexy animesque girls as well as they think they do.

Based on what little I've seen, it's already heads and shoulders above most How to Draw books I've seen, as it shows every step of the drawing process and explains, in detail, how to make your own variations, angles, and poses. Most How to Draw books gloss over all of that. (Ugh, Learn to Draw the Marvel Way is the worst. It goes from a bunch of ovals, lines, and quadrilaterals and suddenly it's a fully drawn and shaded Spider-Man!)

I would've liked to take life drawing classes if my university didn't lock them to art majors only. (Even introductory classes were locked to art majors only. Because of that rule, the art department removed the art minor--if you wanted to study in another field, either you double majored or you couldn't take art classes.) At the same time, the film department, and my film major classmates, didn't understand why I was so interested in animated TV and movies.
