Not much. That's low for any production, especially animation.

Perhaps they're just using Kickstarter to gauge interest?...

Considering the cronic "Shoe String Budget" that Anime works under it may be the difference between a well done show vs one where corners had to be cut in earnest.

I'm thinking it may also be a way to give a few "special" fans, a little more prestige by allowing them the opportunity to get rewards and goods not available to other people who just buy the volumes afterwards. So while it might not be that big of a difference for the entire production, it's still kind of cool to be a part of the creation of something and to have the exclusive goods to show off.

If they have enough money to produce the anime why would they need a kickstarter? Can somebody explain this to me? I mean, unless the future of the anime depends on the kickstarter. I'm so confused.

this is kinda like a 'want the anime to look nicer? up to ye'. Diomedea are really successful so I'm sure this will already have a great budget theyou probably want more to make it look nicer. interesting idea. leave it up to the people if they want the show to look nice or not

Oh dear. What The hell happened? This is really bizarre, they were advertising it like a top-notch production.

Kickstarter is just a way for a group of selective fans to gain special rewards by raising awareness or monetary support for a speculated productions. The money goes to the project leaders in exchange for rewards like merchandise, autographs, or unique fan experiences, and hopefully this results in a finished product. Nothing is actually guaranteed from the get-go, but you actually become an investor in the project and your money hopefully offers input and support.

This isn't Kickstarter though. There are a handful of these crowdfunding websites. Kickstarter and Indiegogo are two of the largest English-language platforms. Success in recent years for projects like Kickheart, LWA, Time of EVE, Patema Inverted, Bubblegum Crisis, and Otaku No Video have garnered attention and given unique experiences for fans and creators to work together in the creative process. Now Funimation is trying their luck with a new dub for Escaflowne.

Whether or not you believe in crowdfunding, it is an interesting idea. Unsuccessful projects and endeavors have also reminded of the risk involved in investing.
