Nintendo to Lay Off An Additional 190 European Employees

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Nintendo announced on Saturday that it will lay off an additional 190 employees from its European division. The company will let go 190 employees from its Germany-based localization office, on top of the 130 employees from its European headquarters as previously announced in June. The second round of layoffs were temporary employees. All 320 of the former staffers will be let go by Sunday.

The company's European division will outsource the localization and testing responsibilities previously performed in the German offices. The company closed its Großostheim, Germany location and moved its European operations to the Frankfurt, Germany office.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata took a 50 percent paycut from February to June while other members of the board took between 20 to 30 percent cuts this year — a result of recent drops in fiscal projections for the quarter.

The company's Wii U console has sold under expectations since its launch. Nintendo suffered a 17.2 billion yen (US$174.9 million) loss in profits from 2012 to 2013. Total sales dropped eight percent to 74.7 billion yen (US$72.7 million) since last quarter.
