The Cinemas by Shochiku website listed the upcoming films in 2015-2016 from distributor Shochiku, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary. The lineup reported the early Summer 2015 opening of the tentatively titled Gekijō-ban Love Live! (Love Live! the Movie) film. It also offers the tagline, "Please! Fulfill our dream…."

The final episode of the second Love Live! School idol project television anime season announced last June that production on a brand-new film for the franchise has been green-lit. The Nikkei MJ newspaper had reported last August that the film would have opened in Spring 2015.

In 2010, the anime studio Sunrise, Lantis, and ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G Magazine launched Love Live! as a self-described "ultimate user-participation project" which lets its fans vote on the future of the fictional idols. A series of music CDs and animated music videos then followed. The members of the project announced in 2012 that an full anime series has been green-lit for the following year. The second season of the anime was announced in June 2013.

Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and NIS America has licensed both seasons for North American release.
