Sega announced on Wednesday that service for the PlayStation 4 edition of Phantasy Star Online 2 will begin in spring 2016. The company will hold a closed beta test for the game at the end of February 2016.

In addition, Sega announced that the game's "Episode 4" story will launch after maintenance on January 27, 2016.

Sega released the free-to-play Phantasy Star Online 2 (PSO2) role-playing game for Windows PC in Japan in 2012, followed by a PlayStation Vita release in 2013, and an Android and iOS release in April and May 2014, respectively.

The anime adaptation, Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation, will premiere on January 7. The series will have a completely original story, and the story will follow PSO2 players "who may be near you" on Earth in the near future.

The game inspired the "Phantasy Star Online 2-ON STAGE-" stage play in December 2014.
