No Anime Win Awards at 2016 Annecy

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

France's Annecy announced its winners on Saturday. The festival gave out 28 awards, but none of the competing anime titles won in their respective categories. No anime film had screened in competition this year, but several works screened in competition in the Short Films, TV Films, Commissioned Films, and Graduation Films categories. Several films including Belladonna of Sadness, Gamba: Gamba to Nakama-tachi, The Anthem of the Heart, The Boy and The Beast, and Studio Ghibli's co-produced The Red Turtle screened outside of competition.

Last year, Production I.G's Miss Hokusai anime film received the Jury Distinction prize in the Official Feature Film Competition at the festival. In 2014, Production I.G's Giovanni's Island film won the same Jury Distinction prize. Mirai Mizue's "Wonder" short also won the CANAL+Creative Aid Award for a Short Film that year, and Fuyu Arai's "Tissue Animals" short won the Cristal for a Commissioned Film prize.

No anime won any awards in 2013.

Established in 1960, Annecy is the world's oldest and largest animation film festival. This year, it ran from June 13-18 at the French community of the same name.
