Nintendo Switch Console Sales Reach 22.86 Million Units Worldwide

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Nintendo revealed that its Nintendo Switch console has sold 22.86 million units worldwide as of September 30. The company has also sold 111.10 million software units for the Switch. The console has now surpassed the lifetime worldwide unit sales of the Nintendo GameCube, which has sold 21.74 million units.

The Famitsu website reported in September that the Nintendo Switch had sold more than 5 million Switch console units in Japan in the 1.5 years (79 weeks) since the console went on sale. Nintendo announced in July that it had sold 19.67 million units worldwide as of June 30. The company also revealed in July that the console now has 10 games that have sold more than 1 million units worldwide as of June 30.

The console launched worldwide on March 3, 2017, and it had sold an estimated 330,637 units in Japan within three days of its launch. The sales surpassed 500,000 units in Japan in four weeks — outpacing Sony's PlayStation 4 over the same time period — and surpassed 1 million units in Japan by June 25.

The Nintendo Switch had outsold the Wii U console, which has sold 13.56 million units worldwide, as of December 31.

Nintendo additionally announced that it has now sold 73.53 million Nintendo 3DS consoles and 371.16 million software units for the 3DS. Nintendo sold 0.64 million 3DS consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2018.

The company previously stated it expects to sell 20 million Nintendo Switch units in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2019. The company also stated it expects to sell 4 million 3DS consoles in the same time period.
