Tiger Doraemon Ushers in New Tokyo Skyscraper

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Fujiko F. Fujio's Doraemon character earned his stripes. The white tiger character, dubbed "Toranomon" ("tora" is the Japanese word for tiger) is the mascot of a new high-rise development in the Toranomon business district in Tokyo. The cute character appeared in a commercial with the tag line "Hello, Mirai Tokyo" (Hello, Future Tokyo).

The Toranomon Hills buildings opened on Wednesday with much fanfare. The building is part of many projects gearing for the 2020 Olympic Games. It should come as no surprise that Doraemon was selected as the mascot for the area since he is the official ambassador for Tokyo's 2020 Olympic Games.

The skyscraper is also impressive in its own right. It measures 52-stories high and is the second tallest in Tokyo. The top is crowned by Hyatt Hotels Corp.'s Andaz brand hotel, a first for Japan.

Mori Building Company developed the project as part of its long-term plans to develop the district over the next 10 years. The company will invest about one trillion yen (~US$9.8 billion) in the area.
