Goro Miyazaki Discusses Himself and His Father
posted on by Eric Stimson
At a September 2 event in Tokyo's Shibuya district promoting his upcoming TV anime Sanzoku no Musume Ronja, Gorō Miyazaki, an anime director and son of the world-famous Hayao Miyazaki, shed some light on how he sees himself vis-a-vis his dad.
When asked whether he would be his father's successor, he replied, "I can't, and don't, think of myself as a writer. I can't be a post-Hayao Miyazaki [sic], there's no way I can." In addition, he said, "I can do work if I'm given a theme and if I have the right circumstances. I can't be like him and have my own studio and make things from original works, from my own ideas."
Sanzoku no Musume Ronja, based on the Swedish children's book series Ronja the Robber's Daughter, premieres on NHK BS Premium on October 11 at 7 PM.
