Out of 10,000 People Surveyed, 23% Are Self-Proclaimed Otaku

posted on by Bamboo Dong

The Yano Research Institute surveyed over 10,000 men and women between the ages of 15-69 living in Japan in an attempt to better understand the growing geek market.

When asked "Do you consider yourself an otaku, or have other people referred to you as an otaku?" 23% of the respondents responded "yes." Of those people, 67% reported that they were unmarried.

The fastest growing markets included the "idol" market, which included groups like AKB48 and Momoiro Clover Z, with an increase of 19.9% in sales. Vocaloid software and merchandise sales increased by 19.2%. Toy gun sales, which included airsoft guns and model guns, grew by 23.1%. Dating sim sales grew by 10.2%, while sales of adult games decreased by 5.1%. Other consumable categories grew more modestly, with sales of doujinshi, figures, and cosplay growing between 1-2.2%.
