Katsuhiro Otomo's Wall Relief for the Sendai Airport Has Been Revealed

posted on by Bamboo Dong

Visitors to Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture had the chance to check out the wall relief that will soon make its way to Tohoku's Sendai Airport. The mural was designed by Akira creator and famed director Katsuhiro Ōtomo, who grew up in Tome, Miyagi Prefecture, part of the Tohoku region.

The relief measures 8.7 x 2.8 m (28.5 x 9.18 ft), and is themed, "Accompanied by Fujin (god of wind) and Raijin (god of thunder) the boy rides against nature's might towards the future he desires." It was created by a group of artists from Atami's Creare studios from 12 tons of clay.

The mural represents the Tohoku region's recovery from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. It will go on display on the first floor of the terminal building at Sendai Airport on March 12.
