Million Dollar Rideable Kuratas Robot Appears at Tokyo Toy Show

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Robots already made waves at the Tokyo Toy Show last weekend with the automated Bumblebee Transformer. Apparently it wasn't the only robot Takara Tomy had up its sleeve. In another corner, the game corporation had one of the highly-sought rideable Kuratas robots.

The four-ton machines by Suidobashi Heavy Industry have occasionally appeared for sale on Amazon for around 140 million yen (US$1.3 million) but quickly sell out or disappear. The live-action Patlabor films employed at least one Kuratas.

Takara Tomy got its hands on one to promote the toymaker's Gagan Gun toy line. Gagan Guns are tiny, remote-controlled robots that players can use to play laser-tag. The company made two special robots in the image of the Kuratas as part of the promotion.

Compared to the million dollar price tag, the miniature Kuratas is a much more reasonable 3,700 yen (US$30). Toy Show attendees who stuck around were treated to a Kuratas demonstration where the pilot climbed into the cockpit and raised the robot's cannon arm into the air.
