Gate Producer Discusses Depicting Japan Military in Interview

posted on by Carlos Cadorniga

Depicting a real-life military force in an anime is no easy task. In a recent interview, GATE anime producer Nobuhiro Osawa shared his own experience in doing so with the Japanese Defense Force.

When asked about the show's appeal, Osawa remarked on its overall uniqueness.

"You have Takumi Yanai's [GATE original light novel author] bizarre idea [for the plot] coupled with Love Live! director Takahiko Kyōgoku making this into an anime," Osawa stated. "The justaposition of the gritty realism of the SDF against a medieval fantasy setting is an interesting contrast."

Osawa also spoke about the characters' appeal in the show, commenting on how easily viewers can relate to them. "I think the protagonist Itami, a character who doesn't hesitate to declare that his hobbies are more important than his work, and the mystical elf Lelei and the quirkiness of characters like Rory are what truly make the show popular."

The production team, according to Osawa, was careful in trying to accurately depict realism when creating the anime.

"We drew a lot from the idea that this is something that already exists being placed in a setting that couldn't possibly be real."

Staff had the most trouble with everyday life scenes for the SDF, ranging from daily meals, the sounds of trumpets, as well as cafeteria and bath scenes to the characters handling military weaponry correctly.

"Obviously, none of the staff knew what went down at SDF bases, but we're really grateful that the ground units let us witness their day-to-day activities."

Osawa even stated that the director was something of a drill sergeant when the show was being made.

"From SDF equipment to their camouflage uniforms to the dragons they fight, the director had the staff redraw constantly to make sure it was all accurate," Osawa admitted. "There were times where I wanted to approach him and say 'Sir...please, enough already...they're about to throw in the towel...'" In the end, however, Osawa noted that the director truly appreciated the hard work that the staff put into their animation.

Osawa signed off with a message for the fans.

"The real battle has yet to begin. Please look forward to further adventures with Itami and his friends."

GATE is a light novel anime adaptation that follows the Japanese Self Defense Force traveling to another dimension to engage with otherworldly monsters threatening their home. The show premiered on July 3.
