Musical Wheelchair To Take the Stage in Tokyo
posted on by Carlos Cadorniga
Yamaha Motorcycles and Yamaha Instruments are coming together to bring a whole new meaning to musical chairs.

The two branches of the manufacturing company is currently developing a special musical wheelchair known as &Y01 (pronounced Andy 01). Combining the technological development processes of Yamaha's two branches, they aim to create an experience of "riding an instrument."

The sail-like contraption propped up on the back contains Yamaha's TLF speaker (thin, light and flexible); the "sail" itself is meant to represent a traditional eighth note. The wheelchair base is a JW Swing char with a one-bar foot rest. The musical instrument functionality comes from the larger two wheels on either side, which also function as percussion drums.
The chairs will be featured in a special performance known as "Slow Movement -The Eternal Symphony-". Two showings will be held; one in United Nations University in Tokyo on October 3 and the other at Toyosu Park on October 25.
Yamaha is the maker behind the Vocaloid technology that birthed virtual idol Hatsune Miku.
