Chinese Live-Action Doraemon Casts Actual Cat

posted on by Eric Stimson
Ultraman's involvement also turning heads

The classic children's manga and anime Doraemon has legions of international fans, and it is especially popular in China. It's not much of a surprise, then, that a Chinese live-action Doraemon film, Baituola, Xiaodingdang, is in the works. But Doraemon fans have been startled to see that Doraemon will be played by an actual cat (or perhaps a CG cat) in this version, instead of a cat-like robot as usual.

Details are scarce, but this poster has also perplexed Doraemon aficionados. What's Ultraman's mother doing there? Can Doraemon pull characters like that out of his pouch?

Baituola, Xiaodingdang is produced by Jack Ma, the Internet mogul behind the Alibaba Group. It will premiere on Taobao, one of Alibaba's websites.

Doraemon has appeared in live-action before: in a series of Japanese commercials for Toyota starring Jean Reno, in a Spanish ad for hazelnut spread, and in a Vietnamese drama series as an actor in a costume.
