Three Voice Actresses Over Age 50 Form Idol Group

posted on by Eric Stimson
Inspired by pro wrestling game

The Japanese girls' pro wrestling video game Ring Dream: Joshi Pro Wres Taisen ("Girls Pro Wrestling Battle") includes an idol group called the backdrops, played by Noriko Hidaka (Akane in Ranma ½, Masumi Sera in Case Closed), Wakana Yamazaki (Akko in the 1998 Himitsu no Akko-chan, Ran in Case Closed) and Naoko Matsui (Ribbon in HappinessCharge PreCure!, Sonoko in Case Closed). This group is now coming to life, thanks to Success, Ring Dream's developer. Unusually, its members are all over 50 years old (Hidaka is 53, Yamazaki is 50 and Matsui is 54).

The backdrops' first single will be "Don't fly," which will incorporates themes like "Don't just keep up appearances" and "Break through your shell!" They will debut it on December 29 at a concert at the Kōrakuen Hall in Suidōbashi, Tokyo, called Encore!~Hoshizora Pro Wres~. "Don't fly" will also become the new opening theme of Ring Dream. The backdrops also hope to perform at the Japan Expo in Paris, France.

The backdrops' formation celebrates the third anniversary of Ring Dream, which was released on December 20, 2012.

While a 50+ idol group certainly breaks the youth culture norm, KBG84 out does them by several decades. The group only has, and will only accept, members of at least 80 years of age with its oldest member being 96. Recruitment and training to join the group begins as early as age 70.
