NASA Looks to PlayStation VR to Train Space Robot Operators

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Advances in robotics has opened doors to create AI musicians, teacher assistants, and hotel staff. The opportunities are endless.

NASA is looking to send more advanced, humanoid robots into the final frontier and have them controlled remotely by operators back on Earth. The process, though, is easier said than done. NASA has turned to PlayStation's VR headset and a demo program called "Mighty Morphenaut" to train its operators and can even factor things like time lag. The interactive environment also provides more intuitive training than a typical computer program.

The program will be used in conjunction with robots like the Robonaut 2. The program, however, is still working out its kinks. Anticipating the motion of a floating object because of the time delay makes it nearly impossible to interact.
