Zaku, Gundam Battle In Front of New Gundam Store in Osaka

posted on by Eric Stimson

Tokyo has several must-see destinations for the Mobile Suit Gundam enthusiast, like the Gundam Cafe in Akihabara and the Gundam Front Tokyo in Odaiba, complete with a life-size Gundam statue outside. But Tokyo's eternal rival Osaka has long lacked these sorts of Gundam shrines and settled for general anime and hobby stores. Beginning last November, these has been rectified with Gundam Square, the Kansai region's very first exclusively Gundam shop.

The store is distinguished by its statue of Char's Zaku locked in combat with Amuro's Gundam, displayed in front for all the world to see. The statue stands 5 meters tall (about 16'5'') and was built as part of the Gundam Connects Japan project, which fires up anticipation for the 40th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam on April 7, 2019 by setting up countdown clocks around Japan.

The statue also lights up at night.

The store itself sells all kinds of Gundam merchandise: Kutani porcelain plates and bowls, T-shirts, chopsticks, coffee mugs, M'Quve's vase, beam saber umbrellas, chocolate in Haro tins, candy, coffee, and more. The store includes a cafe that sells Gundam-inspired dishes, like this rice and whitefish dish and green Zaku pasta.

Between these sections stands a 1/10 scale Gundam Barbatos from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. In addition, the staff all wear Federation uniforms to help you get in the mood.

Gundam Square is located two minutes' walk away from the Bampaku Kinen Kōen station in Expo City in Osaka. A more ambitious plan for a walking Gundam statue has attracted criticism.
