Rei Ayanami Gets Sword-Wielding Kimono Doll

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Anime News Network's merchandise coverage sponsored by Tokyo Otaku Mode.

Takara Tomy opened pre-orders on Thursday for an articulated Rei Ayanami doll. Wearing a white kimono printed with chrysanthemums and wielding a short Japanese sword, Rei is the third in a series based on the Evangelion and Japanese Swords Exhibit that toured Japan and Europe. Takara Tomy will ship the Rei doll in June.

The doll measures 33cm (13in) high and comes with an undershirt, kimono, obi (designed like an AT-Field), socks, underwear, sandals, sword, sheath, a sword holder, stand, stand base, and pedestal for display.

She retails for 16,200 yen (US$135). Customers who pre-order before January 31 will receive a special clear file.

The exhibit opened in 2012 when swordsmiths forged a 3 meter long replica of the Spear of Longinus for the original "Evangelion and Japanese Swords Exhibit" at the Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword Museum. The exhibit has since traveled to several cities in Japan and Europe last year.
