It's that time of the year again: the cherry blossoms fall, and the April Fool's pranks fly. Japan's anime, manga and video game industries are fun-loving enough to participate in this tradition every year. Here are 2016's best anime-related April Fool's pranks.

Bravely Default


Cheeky Parade

The girl group changes its name to "Chicken Party."

Digimon Adventure tri.

Looks like the next Digimon Adventure tri. movie will feature Sukamon and Etemon... hardly the most glamorous of Digimon's many characters.

Fate/Grand Order

Fans of the webcomic Fate/Grand Order will appreciate the official website's April Fool's prank, which replaces the character artwork in the game with Riyo's chibi art style.



Figsoku

The figure blog posts a Girls und Panzer parody, Namahage und Panzer, featuring the scary ogres of Akita Prefecture in tanks.

GATE

As Rory's reward for topping the character popularity poll, she will star in her own magical girl spinoff anime, Mahō Shōjo Ai Senshi Rory ("Magical Girl Love Warrior Rory").

Godzilla Resurgence

A new visual at the official website shows the fearsome monster taking on an Eva unit. (Hideaki Anno, Neon Genesis Evangelion's director, will co-direct Godzilla Resurgence.)

Syaro reveals a new side to herself, the phantom thief Lapin, in the upcoming anime series of the same name.

Kaiketsu Zorori

After 30 years, the famous children's book/manga/anime series Kaiketsu Zorori will finally get a live-action version.

Magic of Stella

The manga about high school girls making dōjinshi will now be a magical girl story, as one might expect from the title. A "deadline-abiding action" game is also in the works.

MegaHobby Station

This is MegaHobby's new mascot. She's been filling their Twitter account with bragging tweets.

Mr. Osomatsu

Fate fans get another treat today: Saber, and the Fate universe in general, has taken over Mr. Osomatsu's website! The show is now called Saber-san ("Mrs. Saber").The site also contains links to Puella Magi Kiritsugu Magica, EiColle (eiyū means "hero"), and Katatsuki Ranbu (Katatsuki is another name for Type-Moon).

Nitroplus

The visual novel developer announces a new anime, Tokyo-Live!, to premiere in April 2199, and posts a bizarre opening theme and video.


Ordet

The studio's latest project, Ai-chan Master Happy Live, puts a marine spin on the old idol theme.

Sansha Sanyō

The character Sakura will star in her own anime spin-off, Lovely Idol Sakura.

Selector Infected Wixoss

The website for the Wixoss trading card game reposts a 2015 "teaser movie" for the live-action Selector Infected Wixoss film, which "earned negative box-office receipts for the first time in cinematic history."

Show By Rock!!

The official website announces an upcoming movie, Mahō Shōjo Plasmagica ("Magical Girl Plasmagica"), in which the cast opts for the magical girl route in favor of the idol life. The premiere is set for "the 69th day of the 69th month," and advance ticket customers may receive Shian's ribbon as a gift.

Wargaming

The maker of the online games World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Warships unveils its latest project: World of Wartrains.
