Fushigi Yugi Creator Draws Hypothetical 2016 Versions of Characters

posted on by Amanda Ellard

Yū Watase, creator of Fushigi Yugi, started posting 2016 versions of the series' characters on Twitter on Sunday. The beginning tweet reads, "when drawing characters for 'Fushigi Yugi's New Production/20 Years Later Remake,' it became a style like this! Project ٩( ᐛ )و by author." She also emphasized that the designs are for fun, and asked fans to not take talk of the hypothetical remake seriously.

Watase ran the manga in Shogakukan's Shōjo Comic (Sho-Comi) magazine from 1992 to 1996, and Shogakukan published 18 compiled book volumes. She then drew Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden from 2003 to 2013. Viz also published Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden in North America. The original manga inspired a television anime and several original video anime titles. Both Geneon Entertainment and Media Blasters licensed the television anime in North America. There was also a stage play adaption for the series that opened April 8-15 in Japan.
