Thermae Romae's Author Mari Yamazaki Draws Illustration for Upcoming Bathhouse-themed Film

posted on by Amanda Ellard

Mari Yamazaki, author of Thermae Romae, drew an illustration for the upcoming Japanese film Her Love Boils Bathwater (Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai).

The live-action film comes out on October 29 in Japan. The story follows Futaba (Rie Miyazawa), who has a tender and tough side, and her daughter Azumi (Hana Sugisaki). When Futaba learns that she doesn't have much time left to live, she decides she has four things she must do before she dies: find her missing husband and get him to resume the family bathhouse business, get her daughter Azumi to stand on her own, find the right man for Azumi, and something related to her own secret.

The collaboration sprung out of the fact that the father's occupation is running a bathhouse, which is a major theme in Yamazaki's award-winning seinen series Thermae Romae. Yamazaki comment that, "Just the mother's affection alone can probably boil all of the bathhouse water in the entire country of Japan. Make no mistake."

In the picture, the protagonist of Thermae Romae, ancient Rome bathhouse architect Lucius, springs up in front of Futaba and her daughter. He states in the dialogue, "Guided by this 'Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai', I traveled across space and time!"

Yamazaki's Thermae Romae comedy manga deals with the two cultures in the world "that have loved baths the most: the Japanese and the Romans!" The manga ran in Enterbrain's Monthly Comic Beam magazine from 2008-2013 and received the Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) in 2010. Yen Press licensed the manga in North America and a six episode anime TV series aired on Fuji TV in January 2012. It also inspired two live-action films starring Hiroshi Abe.
