Magical Girl Raising Project Creator's Hometown Spotted as Inspiration for Anime's Locales

posted on by Amanda Ellard

Landmarks and everyday spots of Jōetsu city in Niigata Prefecture, Japan inspired many settings in the newly aired anime Magical Girl Raising Project. The novels' creator Asari Endō's hometown is Jōetsu and landmarks that appear in the anime can be found in Jōetsu, as well. According to the original novels' publisher Takarajimasha, while Endō. never specified the location in the series' original light novels, he was thinking of Jōetsu and Niigata prefecture as he wrote the story.

Some of the look-alike scenes include a station fashioned after Takada Station,

Takada Castle's triple-layered turret,

The road in front of Takada Park's Gokurakubashi bridge,

Takada Park's Gokurakubashi bridge,

a local middle school affiliated with Jōetsu Education University (where one of the magical girls commutes to),

an alleyway near the station,

the Ōtemachi footbridge,

the Lungwood art hotel (where two of the magical girls talked on the rooftop),

and even the overall layout of the coastal town.

The anime began airing on October 1 and Hiroyuki Hashimoto (Is the order a rabbit?) is directing the anime at Lerche, with Takao Yoshioka (Elfen Lied, High School DxD, Your Lie in April) who is supervising and writing the scripts. Yukiko Aikei (Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, Accel World, Your Lie in April) designed the characters for animation. The anime is based off Asari Endō's light novel series by the same name, which currently has eight volumes. Takarajimasha published the first volume of the light novel series with art by Maruino in June 2012.
