Godzilla swoops in to destroy the city once again in a new commercial for the mobile phone service provider Softbank. The ad for Softbank's campaign "Good Shopping Day" on November 11 (also Pocky Day), meant to enticing people to shop more on that day, aired nationwide starting November 3, Godzilla's birthday. The commercial takes place in the world of Shin Godzilla and tells the story of Godzilla suddenly appearing and heading straight for a Softbank shop celebrating "Good Shopping Day". A struggle ensues to continue giving out free pocky to customers in the wake of evacuation and destruction.
The end of the ad notes that in addition to "Good Shopping Day," Softbank is currently offering free “Giga Pocky” (named after its newest mascot) to those who fill out a survey on their website.
Shin Godzilla is the latest addition to TOHO's film series after a 12-year absence since 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars. The film opened in Japan on July 29, and has earned more than 7.7 billion yen (about US$74.18 million) and sold more than 4.1 million tickets. The film has surpassed the earnings and ticket sales of director Hideaki Anno's previous film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Co-directing with the Evangelion creator was Shinji Higuchi, Anno's frequent collaborator and the director of the live-action Attack on Titan films. Funimation hosted two premieres for the film in Los Angeles on October 3 and New York on October 5 and screened the film in theaters across North America October 22-27.
