Evangelion Theme Singer, Shin Godzilla Composer Collaborate on New Single

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

You'd have to have lived under a rock to have never heard "Cruel Angel's Thesis" by Yoko Takahashi. The song, despite being over 20 years old, is Japan's favorite anisong. Karaoke-goers still belt out the lyrics and the theme was recently selected to encourage otaku to get fit.

Composer Shiro Sagisu also worked on the television anime and continues to collaborate with director Hideaki Anno. Anno and Sagisu reunited on last year's Shin Godzilla film. His composition history brought him and Takahashi back into orbit as both signed on for the upcoming "Shin Godzilla vs. Evangelion Symphony" performances in March. The two have decided they will also work together on a new single that will be released in Japan on March 22, the same day as the Shin Godzilla Blu-ray and DVD home video.

The special "tag match single" is still untitled but will feature rearrangements of songs from both the Eva series and Shin Godzilla by Sagisu. Customers that purchase both the single and the Shin Godzilla movie soundtrack at the same store at the same time will get two jacket art stickers.

Takahashi is also releasing her best-of album celebrating her 25 year career in music on March 22. Disk Union recently published a collection of Sagisu's writings with cover art by Moyoco Anno.

The Godzilla vs Evangelion mash-up has included crossover figures, merchandise, artwork, and more all stemming from an April Fool's joke.
