Azumanga Daioh Voice Actress Tomoko Kaneda Announces Pregnancy

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Voice actress Tomoko Kaneda (43) announced on the TBS Television program Ningen Kansatsu Variety on Thursday that she is six months pregnant.

The television segment's theme was "If an entertainer becomes a kindergarten teacher, the children will listen to what they say." Kaneda was on the program to prove or disprove the point and headed to a school with comedian Hirohisa Ōta to find out. During the segment, Kaneda confessed "I'm actually going to become a mother." Ota congratulated her upon hearing the news.

She said that she and husband Wataru Mori (33) are anxious but the couple is also smiling happily. Mori also appeared on the program and thanked everyone for their support.

After the program aired, both Kaneda and Mori updated their blogs with basically the same messages, writing that the baby would "probably be human" and that they had been anxious to have a child given Kaneda's age. They pledged to welcome the baby with "120%" of their feelings and hoped to make a happy household "more full of laughter than anywhere else," even though they are an "odd couple: a sports-obsessed actor and a puny voice actress." They diverged in their postscripts, with Kaneda worried that Mori would "send the kid on too many trips" (a reference to the Japanese proverb "Send cute children on a trip," meaning "Make sure they experience some hardship"), while Mori worried that Kaneda would make the household too cheerful.

Carp are a symbol of love in Japan because they share the same word (koi).

Kaneda debuted as a voice actress in 2000. Her roles have included Chiyo in Azumanga Daioh, Bonta-kun in Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, Aoi Oribe in Myself; Yourself, Mike in Sketchbook ~full color'S~, MAYUKO Kamikawa in sola, Culumon in Digimon Tamers, and Dengaku Man in Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. Kaneda most recently starred in Puzzle & Dragons X as Tamazō. She married Mori in November 2013.
