Anime-Focused 2.5D Musical School Opens in Tokyo in 2018

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Jikei college group's Tokyo School of Anime will add a program devoted to 2.5D musicals in April 2018. The school will be the first of its kind in Japan.

Tokyo School of Anime defines 2.5D musicals as those that are inspired by anime, manga, and video games. The school's website features cast images from the Haikyu!!, Kuroko's Basketball, and other stage adaptations.

The new program will host the foremost members of the industry as lecturers and cooperate with leading institutions. Popular actors in the industry, including Yūki Kimisawa (Naruto musical's Kakashi) and Kōji Kominami (Ensemble Stars! musical's Rei), will also visit the school as guests. The new program's four majors will target students who want to become cast members, work in sound and lighting, serve as producers and directors, or create sets and props.

Tokyo School of Anime already offers 26 majors in the areas of voice acting, anime production, anime design, anime creation, and anime business. The college introduced a professional gaming program in 2015.

A different type of 2.5D stage production is also making waves in the world of Japanese popular culture. The augmented-reality 2.5D idol group AR performers held their first major debut concerts on February 14 and February 15.
