Kemono Friends Dominates Winter Anime on Twitter Rankings

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

This season's surprise sleeper hit is the most talked about winter 2017 anime series on Twitter, according to the Kadokawa Ascii Research Laboratories. The content and information trend analytics company revealed its research for the most Tweeted anime series between January 24 and February 21, crowning Kemono Friends as the top show by a large margin. The show had 1,257,696 Tweets made in the given timeframe followed by the new season of Gintama. with 314,270 Tweets.

The third place winner was, surprisingly, Granblue Fantasy the Animation. The TV anime isn't airing until April due to a delay but its Zinkenstill-Hen (Zinkenstill Arc) special premiered in late January.

The full top 10 list is as follows:

  1. Kemono Friends (1,257,696)
  2. Gintama. (314,270)
  3. Granblue Fantasy the Animation (188,078)
  4. Kirakira ☆ Precure a la Mode (183,720)
  5. KONOSUBA - God's blessing on this wonderful world! 2 (150,730)
  6. Saga of Tanya the Evil (135,506)
  7. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (131,732)
  8. Scum's Wish (124,941)
  9. BanG Dream! (119,565)
  10. ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. (96,996)

Kemono Friends' popularity has expanded into the series' disc sales, theme song CD sales, and even attracted more visitors to real zoos. The show's pairing of cute animal girls against suspiciously desolate backdrop has inspired fan theories.

The ranking is quite different that initial Japanese poll results on Charapedia and the corresponding ANN reader's poll. Japan originally elected Gintama. as its most anticipated show for the season followed by KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!! and Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Impure King Arc. ANN readers chose Blue Exorcist. Little Witch Academia, and Gintama. Kemono Friends was nowhere to be found.

Kadokawa Ascii Research Lab analyzed last season as well, naming Yuri!!! on Ice the clear victor followed by Haikyu!! and Tōken Ranbu: Hanamaru.
