Cup Noodle Anime Ad Imagines Kiki's Delivery Service's Kiki, Tombo as 17-year-olds

Manga creator Eisaku Kubonouchi, BUMP OF CHICKEN band participate in new "Hungry Days" ad campaign

Nissin Foods revealed a new anime ad for its Cup Noodles on Monday based on Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service film. While the original film follows 13-year-old protagonist Kiki, the new ad imagines Kiki and Tombo as 17-year-old high schoolers in the city. They share some archetypal Japanese high school moments, often with a Nissin Cup Noodle, until Kiki finally confesses her love to Tombo.

Manga creator Eisaku Kubonouchi (Chocolat, Cherry) designed the characters for the ad. Actress Minami Hamabe voices Kiki, while Yūki Kaji voices Tombo.

The ad is the first part of Nissin's new "Hungry Days" campaign based around the theme of "youth." BUMP OF CHICKEN wrote a song for the campaign titled "Kinen Satsuei" (Commemorative Photo), which features in the above ad. Megumi Hayashibara narrated a preview for the campaign earlier this month, with art by Kubonouchi.

Nissin's most recent promotional tactics before this involved an elaborate collaboration with Final Fantasy XV.
