Chiho Saitō's Revolutionary Girl Utena is getting a new line of merchandise from the otaku mail-order website Super Groupies for the anime's 20th anniversary. The merchandise line includes a Utena and Anthy bracelet watch, a Utena shawl, and a brooch modeled after the Sword of Dios. Reservations will be accepted until September 18, and the items will be delivered in early December.
The Utena and Anthy bracelet and watch set is made from brass, Swarovski crystals, and crystal glass. The set has various removable and exchangeable parts, including two gold chains, and it can be worn in three different ways. The removable part over the watch face is modeled after a rose, and the crystals underneath it are pink and purple, after Utena and Anthy's hair colors. The colors in the chain are meant to evoke the character's costumes from the show. The set is priced at 12,800 yen (about US$117) plus tax.
The Utena shawl is wine-red and pink, with a rose and stained glass motif. It is made of wool and acrylic and is large enough to be worn as a shawl or used as a small blanket, but it can also be folded over and used as a scarf. Its total size is 163 cm long (about 64 in) and 62 cm across (about 24 in), with 10 cm fringe (about 4 in). The shawl is priced at 9,800 yen (about US$90) plus tax.
The Sword of Dios model brooch is made of brass and tin alloy and has a rose motif charm attached with a gold chain. It is approximately 2.8 cm long (about 1.1 in) and can be worn together with the Utena shawl. It is priced at 4,800 yen (about US$44) plus tax.
The anime's 20th anniversary is also being celebrated with a new Blu-ray Disc collection and exhibition in Ikebukuro. Also, original manga artist Chiho Saitō, drew a new chapter of the Revolutionary Girl Utena manga in July, and she will be drawing an additional new chapter this winter.
The Revolutionary Girl Utena anime was directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara and originally aired in 1997 for a total of 39 episodes. Central Park Media and later Nozomi Entertainment released the series on DVD in North America, and Nozomi Entertainment is planning a Blu-ray Disc release for this year.
