Godzilla Gets 1st Ever Festival to Mark Anime Film's Premiere

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Leading up to the premiere of the first Godzilla anime film, titled Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei, the Godzilla franchise will hold the "Gojira Fes" (Godzilla Fest) event at Cinecity Square in Kabukichō, Tokyo on November 3. The event will be the first ever to celebrate the franchise's creation and history.

The festival will display images of eight Godzillas from the Heisei-period monster to its most recent depiction. The event will have special stage events with guests to celebrate the anime. The festival will also feature "G Food" stalls and a festival corner that children will be able to enjoy.

Additionally, Sanrio is collaborating with the franchise to celebrate the upcoming anime.

The Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters film is planned to be the first entry in a trilogy of anime films. The film will open in Japan on November 17, and then it will stream globally on the Netflix service this year.

TOHO's newest Godzilla film, Shin Godzilla (known as Godzilla: Resurgence in Southeast Asia and other distribution territories), opened in Japan in July 2016. Funimation screened the film in North America in October.

The original live-action Godzilla film premiered in Japan in 1954, and TOHO has produced a total of 29 films in the franchise. Including Shin Godzilla, the film series has sold more than 100 million tickets.
