The Matrix's Green Scrawling Code was Scanned from Cookbooks

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Production designer Simon Whiteley's name might not be familiar to you but you're undoubtedly familiar with his creations. Whiteley created The Matrix's iconic code, dubbed the "Green Rain." It's the falling series of green characters meant to represent the overarching technological overlords currently manipulating humanity.

It's also a series of tasty Japanese recipes.

Whiteley revealed in a recent interview that the code was inspired by his wife, who is from Japan. He scanned the katakana and hiragana characters from her cookbooks.

Whiteley currently lives in Sydney and works at the Animal Logic animation and visual-effects studio. He continues to add Japanese flavor to his projects. Most recently he worked on the The Lego Ninjago Movie and the Jaegars of Pacific Rim.
