Poll Reveals Which Costumes Are All the Scream in Shibuya This Halloween

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Halloween was initially a non-entity in Japan but has grown into one of Tokyo's big parties. This is particularly true in Shibuya with parades and costumed participants increasing in size and number. The party has its pluses and minuses as like any big party, it can attract its share of vandals and trash.

Politicians even get in on the festivities. Assuming everyone keeps a cool head, the holiday's can turn its focus to what really matters: the costumes. About 70% of participants between the ages of 20 and 39 at the Shibuya party dress up in costume, according to a poll conducted from October 10-12 across six prefectures.

The 200 participants that answered that they were going to dress up for the Shibuya party also revealed their costume preferences. The majority of women plan to dress as witches, followed by Disney characters, pumpkins, anime characters, and finally zombies.

Male participants were more interested in being anime characters, as it ranked first in their poll. The second most popular costume for men was zombies, followed by pumpkins, obake (ghosts), and various. Women cited that easiness and many variations is what made dressing up as a witch appealing. Male participants cited both Marvel superheroes and Pokémon characters as top choices.

What kind of costume are you planning this year? Let us know in the forums!
