Toshio Furukawa Remarks on Voicing Popuko in Pop Team Epic

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The third episode of Pop Team Epic premiered on Saturday, and six voice actors each so far have played Popuko and Pipimi. Veteran voice actor Toshio Furukawa (Dragon Ball's Piccolo, One Piece's Ace) played Popuko in the second episode, and he reflected on the experience on Twitter on Monday. He said:

The multiple casting of Popuko and Pipimi makes clear the differences in acting theory of individual voice actors. In a way, it seems to be content that stirs up actor training and voice actor training. The basic practices (foundations) are the same, but diverse acting theories (houses) are built on top. Even with extreme theories, "There are the same number of acting theories as the people who professionally express them" holds true.

Whatever the significance of the multiple casting, it seems to fit in with the show's inscrutable meaning and style. Even series director Jun Aoki has struggled to wrap his head around the anime and its source manga.

Crunchyroll is streaming the anime with English subtitles, and FUNimation debuted its first English-dubbed episode on Tuesday. Nuanced meaning can easily morph through translation, so fans now have a chance to interpret the series through two lenses.

Have you seen the show? What do you think it all means, if anything? Good luck in trying to figure it out!
