The publishing imprint Dengeki Bunko is celebrating its 25th anniversary with unique merchandise of its characters, including Sword Art Online heartthrob Asuna. The heroine is getting a brand-new swimsuit figure to commemorate the anniversary.
The figure is based on previous artwork drawn by Sword Art Online light novel illustrator abec for the Dengeki Bunko Festival in 2015. The image was recreated for the 23cm (9in) tall figure. Asuna's frilly red and white bathing suit calls back to her Knights of the Blood uniform. The sarong can be detached from the figure revealing just the bikini.
Dengeki is selling the figure in a standard and limited edition. The standard edition includes only the figure while the limited edition also bundles a B2 size tapestry of abec's original illustration. The standard version will cost 14,018 yen (US$130) and the limited edition costs 16,718 yen (US$155). Pre-orders are open until June 18 and orders are expected to ship in March 2019.
Sword Art Online, its lead characters Kirito and Asuna, and its soundtrack topped last year's Newtype Awards. The Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale anime film has earned over 4.3 billion yen (about US$38.2 million) in worldwide sales. A television anime adaptation of the light novel's Alicization arc is currently in the works and its spinoff Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is currently airing in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll.
