Monster Strike's Gintama Campaign Ads Feature Gorilla, Mayo Birthday Cake

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The collaboration between XFlag's Monster Strike smartphone game and the Gintama anime launched last week. The Yorozuya crew issued apologies in lieu of regular promotional videos to kick off the campaign. Now, the gang is back with more wacky videos that show what's going on with them behind the scenes.

The "Isao Kondō seeks cooperative play" video begins by explaining that, as stated in a previous video, the televised version of Kondō's commercial was changed to still images, but it was decided that the video could be specially shown online. Gintoki sees a gorilla he assumes is Kondō going naked again, and he wonders what Kondō is up to. Shinpachi suggests the Kondō gorilla is seeking out a partner for "cooperative play." Kagura and Shinpachi get in a fight while discussing a certain part of the gorilla's body. Gintoki intervenes, mentioning the gorilla is doing "naked solo play."

In the "Tōshirō Hijikata birthday party" video, Kondō announces "congratulations from the Shinsengumi" and begins singing the "Happy Birthday" song to Hijikata. The younger Shinsengumi member is less than excited, but in the background, a cake decorator assembles a mayonnaise birthday cake for him. The cake is dripping with Hijikata's favorite condiment and has a design inspired by Shinsengumi uniforms.

For the collaboration, Gintama characters are available to use in play in the game. A related Twitter campaign allowed fans to unlock in-game bonus items. The collaboration's website is streaming four episodes of Gintama anime series for a limited time, and the entire promotion will end on May 17.
