Buddha Laughs Through High School in Nara Shika Tanashi Manga

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Hikaru Nakamura's Saint Young Men manga imagines Jesus and Buddha as apartment dwelling guys in Tachikawa, Tokyo. The comedic exploits of the enlightened and spiritual duo is novel but Rose Yukinoshita's Nara Shika Tanashi manga is even stranger. Can you imagine Buddha's life as a Japanese high school girl?

Nara Shika Tanashi follows a Buddha-faced girl named Shanako and her friend, a deer named Shikao. Every evening at Nara Park, Shanako discusses her troubles with the deer. Shanako and the duo's 'straight man' Shikao talk out silly situations in a Kansai dialect.

Nara Park is well known for its population of Sika deer and multiple shrines and temples. Both the Kasuga Shrine and Kōfuku temple previously consider the deer sacred.

The manga is serialized in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine. Hakusensha published the first volume on Friday and released a promotional video starring Yūki Ono as both Shanako and Shikao.

The closest train station to Nara Park is also participating in a collaboration with the Nara Shika Tanashi manga. The Kintetsu Nara station will feature posters for the manga starting on July 30. On July 21 and 22, flyers featuring both characters will be distributed near the ticket gates that include a Nara tourism map and a manga chapter.

Bookstores in Nara prefecture will have posters for the manga on site. Bookstore chains like, Village Vanguard, will hand out bonus illustrations to customers that purchase the first volume of Nara Shika Tanashii.
