Ribon Shōjo Manga Magazine's Book Showcases Classic Bundled Bonuses

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Shueisha released the Ribon no Furoku Kawaii no Himitsu (Ribon Furoku: The Secret of Kawaii) book for its Ribon shōjo manga magazine on Wednesday. The book costs 1,800 yen (about US$16) and showcases the bundled bonus items for the magazine.

The 104-page book focuses on releases in 1993, the year that the magazine reached its peak circulation of 2.55 million copies. However, the book also highlights bundled items from the 1980s and 1990s. In the first chapter, manga artists' super-deformed illustrations appear alongside the bundled bonuses they inspired. Manga artists who contributed to the chapter include Koi Ikeno, Aoi Hiiragi, Momoko Sakura, Megumi Mizusawa, Wataru Yoshizumi, Ai Yazawa, Min Ayahana, Miho Obana, Yue Takasuka, Ayumi Shiina, Maguro Fujita, Mihona Fujii, Arina Tanemura, and Yōko Maki.

The book's second chapter includes planning documents and diagrams for the bundled items. The third chapter features a variety of photographs of the items listed by release year, category, and other classifications.

Yazawa contributed the cover illustration. She also participated in a round-table discussion for the book with Mizusawa, Yoshizumi, and Obana. Ikeno provided an essay manga for the release. The book bundles remakes of Tokimeki Tonight's Ranze Humming Rack, which shipped with magazine's May 1984 issue, and Marmalade Boy's Miki-chan Handmade Note, which shipped with the magazine's July 1992 issue.
