Plastic Smile is set in Shizuoka, and it is the first regional live-action series that NHK's Shizuoka branch is producing. Momoiro Clover Z member Kanako Momota plays the drama's main character Tsumugi Hayashida. Tsumugi works for a plastic model company in Shizuoka and loves cosplaying as her favorite manga characters when not working.

In the drama, Tsumigi loves the Liaison Diavlo series. The fictitious fantasy manga centers on a junior high school student who winds up in a different world. The student receives the name Ryūha in the new world. Ryūha sets out on a journey, struggling with bewilderment and isolation along the way.
