Black Jack Chair Celebrates Osamu Tezuka's 90th Birthday

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

This November 3 marks what would have been Osamu Tezuka's 90th birthday. The legendary creator received a medical degree before devoting himself to manga, so it seems fitting to celebrate his life and accomplishments through a manga that stars a doctor.

A certain U-shaped chair appears in Tezuka's Black Jack manga. Now, the chair is getting a real-world version. Japanese furniture maker Yamaso Industry is producing only 50 of the tribute chairs, and each one will have a serial number.

One arm on the chair will feature the Tezuka 90th "anniversary of birth" logo. The chair leather will come from domestic Japanese Holstein cattle, and the chair legs will be made of solid Hokkaido walnut.

The chair costs 486,000 yen (about US$4,320), and it is available for pre-order exclusively through Animate Online. The item may be one of the most expensive items ever offered through the online shop. Members will receive 22,500 points from the purchase of the chair alone. Orders will begin shipping in early October.
