New Doraemon Ukiyo-e Print Recreates Hokusai's Kōshū Kajikazawa

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Collab Japan opened preorders for a new Doraemon ukiyo-e print on Monday. The design is based on Katsushika Hokusai's Kōshū Kajikazawa print from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. Doraemon and Nobita are stand-ins for the fishermen in the original.

The print uses traditional Edo-period techniques of hand carving and painting, and the detailed monochrome design uses the aizuri (blue print) style of ukiyo-e. The video below shows ukiyo-e artist Kazuo Watanabe creating the print.

The design was limited to 300 prints, and according to Collab Japan's website, the print is already sold out. The print cost 48,600 yen (about US$430), and orders are slated to ship in late December.

Collab Japan released a different Doraemon ukiyo-e print in October 2017.
