A Place Further Than the Universe Leads Tokyo Anime Awards Fan Vote

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Banana Fish follows in close pursuit

Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2019 (TAAF) revealed the preliminary results for this year's fan-voted Animation of the Year: Anime Fan Award. Leading the pack is A Place Further Than the Universe, a coming-of-age story about four teenage girls who sign up to go on an expedition to Antarctica. The series was recently recognized by The New York Times in its list of Best International TV Shows of 2018.

The plucky girls aren't leading by a large margin; they could still be surpassed Banana Fish. Set in New York City, the crime drama follows the beautiful yet deadly Ash Lynx and his unlikely companion Eiji Okamura as they navigate the darkest underbelly of New York's crime families.

In third place is Laid-Back Camp, the cozy series that invigorated Japan's winter camping scene with a new influx of fans. The anime follows Rin Shima who had always enjoyed camping alone but expands her horizons when she meets newbie camper Nadeshiko Kagamihara.

The results are updated daily until the poll closes on December 24. The top 20 series and top 10 films are listed below.

The poll also decides works that will be eligible for the Theatrical Animation Division and Television Animation Division awards, as well as the individual awards for anime staff members. An anime series or film had to air between October 15, 2017 to October 13, 2018 to qualify for a spot. This cut-off isn't limited to a show's debut date. For instance, Land of the Lustrous premiered on October 7, 2017 but is still considered applicable to the poll because its episodes aired beyond the cut-off. This is also why last year saw Yuri!!! on Ice take the top spot in both 2016 and 2017 awards.

Voting can be done only once per person with up to three TV and movies choices each.
