Sazae-san to Include 28 Real Life Families in Anime's 50th Anniversary Special

posted on by Kim Morrissy

The Sazae-san anime is recruiting 28 families who live in Asahigaoka to appear in the anime's 50th anniversary special, which is planned to commence in fall this year. Asahigaoka is a district in Tokyo, and is the setting of the Sazae-san series.

The chosen families will get anime character designs based on their likenesses, and their names will be used in the show. Three families will appear in the animated special that is planned to air in fall 2019, while the other 25 families will appear as regular characters in the anime from fall 2019 to spring 2020.

Kōya Watanabe, an editor at Fuji Television, said, "We don't care how many people are in your family or what the structure is like - we encourage anyone to apply."

Interested people should apply at the anime's website with their names, addresses, and contact details, along with profiles and anecdotes about their family, and (if possible) photos of their family members.

The anime adaptation of Machiko Hasegawa's family life manga Sazae-san began airing in October 1969. The anime is usually the highest ranked animated series in Japan each week. In 2013, the show was awarded the Guinness World Record for longest-running animated television series.

The anime's 50th anniversary plans also include collaborations with popular television programs, an exhibit tentatively titled "Sazae-san-ten," and a sequel stage play set 10 years after the events of the anime's story.
