'World of Yoshiyuki Tomino' Exhibition Tours Japan Starting From June

posted on by Kim Morrissy

The "World of Yoshiyuki Tomino" exhibit will open in the Fukuoka Art Museum from June 22 to September 1. From there, the exhibit will be brought to the Hyōgo Prefectural Museum of Art from October 12 to December 22, the Iwami Art Museum from January 10, 2020 to March 23, the Aomori Museum of Art from April to June 2020, a yet-to-be-announced venue in the Toyama Prefecture from July to September 2020, and the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art from September to November 2020.

Yoshiyuki Tomino, who is best known for directing the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, left a message on Comic Natalie about the exhibit. He said that although he was flattered that so many museum creators wanted to showcase his work, he didn't think that the concepts behind his work could be translated into an exhibit. He believes that his work as a director isn't just about creating visuals; it is also about expressing broader concepts and ideas. However, the enthusiasm of the curators eventually won him over.

"Through talking with the curators, I've come to think that it may be a good idea to try recording the parts of Tomino that aren't just about making giant robots move," he said.

The exhibit will showcase the animated projects Tomino has worked on over his 50-year career, but with a focus on the influence and ideology underpinning his work throughout each era.
