Shibuya Passes Halloween Drinking Ordinance

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Shibuya officials passed a bill on June 19 that will ban public drinking in the area on Halloween and New Year's Eve.

The ban prohibits drinking alcohol in the streets, parks, and areas around Shibuya station. Public officials also banned activities like climbing street lights and making loud noises using audio equipment.

The bill came as a response to last year's Halloween party where police charged 10 men, some Japanese citizens and others hailing from France, Belgium, and Britain, for overturning a truck during the Halloween celebrations. The suspects allegedly damaged a truck and some suspects were arrested and others fined.

Shibuya's Halloween celebration has become enormous over the last few years and with it an increase in vandalism and littering.
