Sword Art Online Gets Interactive Exhibit To Celebrate Novel's 10th Anniversary

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Details about the interactive exhibit for Sword Art Online's 10th anniversary "Sword Art Online: Ex-Chronicle" were released last week. The exhibit will consist of four areas: "EX-REALITY -Welcome to RATH-", "EX-VIRTUAL THEATER -Dive into AINCRAD-", "EX-CHRONICLE -Birth of the Death Game-", and a merchandise store.

The "EX-REALITY -Welcome to RATH-" area is a large gate to connect the real world and the virtual world. "EX-VIRTUAL THEATER -Dive into AINCRAD-" will have a panoramic screen showing a video based on the theme of Aincrad. "EX-CHRONICLE -Birth of the Death Game-" will have a long interview with series creator Reki Kawahara and a retrospective take on the various adaptations through the point of view of the "game master".

The exhibit will take place from August 4 to 18 in the Akiba Square, which is located on the second floor of the UDX building in Akihabara. The exhibit's website is selling tickets in advance, but only a certain number of spots are available, so only those who win the lottery will be able to purchase them. The site opened its last round of advance ticket applications on Monday, and applications will close on June 30. Regular tickets cost 1,500 yen (US$13), while a premium ticket which comes with a special booklet will cost 3,000 yen (US$27).

The first volume of the Sword Art Online light novel series debuted in Japan on April 10, 2009. Besides the anime series, Kawahara's novels have inspired a manga adaptation, the Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online spin-off light novel series, anime, and manga, and multiple video games. Publisher Dengeki Bunko opened a special site in April with art by illustrator abec to commemorate the anniversary.
