Former SKE48 Idol Miki Yakata Discusses Breast Cancer in New Manga

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Miki Yakata made her big idol debut in 2009 as part of SKE48 at the age of 17. She quickly grew in popularity within the group, auditioning for the AKB0048 anime series and eventually rising to the co-leader of Team S in 2015. However, Yakata's entertainment career was cut short when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Yakata had announced she would "graduate" from the SKE48 group in February 2017. The 27-year-old intended to pursue a career in voice acting while working part-time and doing work as a talent. Approximately a year after her graduation from SKE48, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent surgery for a double mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy. Like many cancer patients, she began losing her hair.

Approximately two years since her diagnosis, Yakata is ready to tell her story with help from manga artist Tomoko Fuyukawa (Mustard Chocolate). 27-sai no Nyūgan Diary: Boku no Miki-chan ga Nyūgan ni natta Hanashi takes the fictional perspective of one of Yakata's cats. Meanwhile, Yakata navigates her daily life post-surgery and pursuing her dream, and continuing treatment.

Fuyukawa is serializing the manga on the Comic Days website. The first chapter can be read in Japanese for free.
