MAPPA's 10th Anniversary Exhibit Demonstrates the Studio's Prolific History

MAPPA's 10th anniversary exhibit in Tokyo covers a hefty amount of ground: 36 titles were represented, which averages out to four titles per year. That's not even the studio's entire output, by the way—MAPPA has come a long way in just 10 years.

The studio's eclectic nature is evident in the exhibit's key visual, which features dozens of characters who are all equally prominent. It's an affirmation that MAPPA's current brand identity is in being able to handle anything, regardless of genre or style.

Because of the sheer breadth of the exhibition, only a smattering of storyboards, designs, and production materials were dedicated to each title. Certain big-name titles like Yuri!!! on Ice, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan come up at multiple junctures, but for the most part, the titles were arranged chronologically.

Thanks to this straightforward presentation, it was easy to admire the sheer variety of MAPPA anime over the years. The exhibit started with Shinichiro Watanabe's Kids on the Slope from 2012 and concluded with RE-MAIN from Summer 2021.

Finally, the exhibit also featured tribute artwork from the various character designers who worked on MAPPA titles: Manabu Akita (Kakegurui, The God of High School), Naoyuki Onda (Rage of Bahamut Genesis), Tomohiro Kishi (Dorohedoro, Attack on Titan The Final Season), Satoshi Iwataki (Dororo), Fumihide Sai (GRANBLUE FANTASY The Animation Season 2), Akemi Hayashi (Banana Fish), Tadashi Hiramatsu (Yuri!!! on Ice, Jujutsu Kaisen), and Kasumi Fukagawa (Zombie Land Saga).

The following voice actors also left positive comments about their experiences working on MAPPA anime: Gō Inoue, Yūma Uchida, Kōki Uchiyama, Kenshō Ono, Junichi Suwabe, Daisuke Namikawa, Romi Park, Yoshimasa Hosoya, Kaede Hondo, Kotono Mitsuishi, Mamoru Miyano, and Hiroyuki Yoshino.

The exhibit will run in Shibuya's Tokyo Anime Center until November 14.
