Louis Vuitton, Murakami Animate Superflat First Love (Updated)

Superflat Monogram anime sequel marks six years of fashion collaboration

The French fashion company Louis Vuitton and Japanese modern artist Takashi Murakami have produced Superflat First Love, an anime short to mark the revamp of Louis Vuitton's Multicolor Spring Palette line of leather accessories. As a sequel to Murakami's Superflat Monogram anime short (2003), the new film also celebrates six years of collaboration between the two pop culture icons. Louis Vuitton will officially launch the Multicolor Sprint Palette lineup on April 28. On the same day, Superflat First Love will have its world premiere on a Japanese mobile website. The characters in the anime will adorn special displays in Louis Vuitton stores during the launch of the product line.

A trailer of Superflat First Love is available on Louis Vuitton's official website. In the linked page, hover over the bottom to display a menu. Select the "Multicolor Spring Palette" item, and then after the introductory Flash opening, select the "ムービーを見る" button at the bottom.

In addition to the Superflat movies, Murakami also created the Kaikai & Kiki anime shorts, which had an episode bundled on a DVD with the Vogue Nippon magazine in Japan in 2007. His headquarters is in Tokyo, but he has a studio in New York and he will open an animation studio in Los Angeles next summer. Murakami premiered his "Planting the Seeds" short with the Kaikai & Kiki characters at 2007's "© MURAKAMI" exhibition in Los Angeles, and his new Los Angeles studio will develop a feature-length film based on this short. Last year, Murakami directed Kanye West's "Good Morning" music video with the Oriental Light and Magic studio (Pokémon, InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time's 3D animation). Murakami had previously overseen the art for West's Graduation album.

Update: What Louis Vuitton's website identifies as the "Superflat First Love Trailer" is actually the original Superflat Monogram short. The Superflat First Love short that will premiere next week is a newer video.
