Magazine Deliverer Arrested for Posting Article Before Release

posted on by Egan Loo

Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department announced on Tuesday that it had arrested 44-year-old part-time magazine delivery person Hideki Satō on suspicion of violating public distribution rights under Japan's copyright law. The suspect is accused of taking a photograph of an article from a weekly magazine before release and posting it on the Internet.

According to the police, the suspect took a mobile phone photo of an article from Weekly Bunshun magazine from the delivery workplace in Saitama Prefecture on January 30 after 1:00 p.m., the day before the issue's release. He then allegedly posted the photograph without authorization on an image-sharing site, where it was available for viewing by the general public.

The article was about members of the popular idol group AKB48. The suspect allegedly said that he wanted to show the article just a little sooner online and that he had also done this on one or two other articles.
